Noise Abatement:
Voluntary Noise Abatement Procedures - The Longmont Municipal Airport has a voluntary noise abatement program. The Airport has developed the Voluntary Noise Abatement Procedures (VNAP) in an effort to be responsive to the concerns of our neighbors and to continue to provide an excellent facility for your use. Voluntary Noise Abatement Procedures (VNAP) are designed to minimize the exposure of residential and other noise sensitive areas to aircraft noise, while ensuring the safety of flight operations. Pilots are asked to follow the voluntary noise abatement procedures and “fly friendly” in an effort to be good neighbors to the citizens who live under the aircraft flight paths.

Longmont airport: City attempts to balance housing needs, FAA concerns - Longmont officials are discussing how to balance the city’s need for more housing with federal grant funding rules for the Vance Brand Airport.
That’s because proposed developments near airports are seen as an “incompatible land use” in certain zones, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA requires cities to restrict land use next to airports to “activities and purposes compatible with normal airport operations,” including airplanes taking off and landing. - May 19, 2024

Advisory Communications:
Joint AOPA_CPA Letter to LMO Airport Advisory Board_RE Part 77 Determinations - The joint letter from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and Colorado Pilots Association (CPA) to the Longmont Airport Advisory Board clarifies that FAA Part 77 “Determination of No Hazard to Air Navigation” findings are limited in scope and do not constitute approval or endorsement of development projects near airports. The associations emphasize that while Part 77 reviews focus only on the safety and preservation of navigable airspace, broader land use compatibility issues—particularly the risks posed by residential development near airports—must be considered under FAA guidance, state plans - September 10, 2025
Joint AOPA/CPA Letter to City of Longmont RE Landing Fee Considerations - The undersigned state and national aviation advocacy organizations request that you and your fellow city leaders very carefully consider the potential implementation of landing fees at Vance Brand airport with thoughtfulness and an open mind. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) is the largest aviation membership organization in the world, representing over 300,000 pilots and aircraft owners and the Colorado Pilots Association (CPA) represents over 700 members in the state promoting aviation and flight safety, pilots’ rights, and inform the general public on topics related to aviation matters. Between our two organizations, we represent nearly 10,000 members across Colorado, including roughly 1,000 who are your constituents residing in vicinity

AOPA Letter to City of Longmont RE_Residential Zoning near Longmont airport - AOPA letter detailing AOPA concerns about the Modern West 2 incompatible development recently approved by the Longmont Planning and Zoning Commission
FAA perspective RE Modern West development at LMO - This FAA letter to the City of Longmont reminds officials of their federal obligations tied to Vance Brand Airport, specifically regarding the proposed ModernWest 2 residential development. The FAA states that such development constitutes an incompatible land use and violates Grant Assurance #21, which requires the city to ensure surrounding land use remains compatible with normal airport operations. With Vance Brand serving 212 based aircraft and about 88,000 annual operations, the FAA warns that failure to comply with grant assurances—after receiving over $6.2 million in federal funding since 1988—could jeopardize the airport’s eligibility for future funding - June 13, 2023
Legal Representation_Modern West Development - This letter, written on behalf of Modern West Longmont, LLC, argues that the proposed residential development near Vance Brand Airport complies with all relevant FAA, zoning, and city requirements. The developers note that the project falls within Longmont’s MU-E zoning district and the Airport Influence Overlay Zone, adheres to FAA Part 77 height restrictions, and is outside the airport’s 65 LDN noise contour, making it compatible with FAA noise standards. They emphasize that no zoning changes are required, the project poses no interference or hazard to airport operations, and they are willing to record an avigation easement to further protect the airport’s long-term interests. The letter concludes that the project aligns with Longmont’s comprehensive plan and is consistent with FAA and city land use compatibility rules - Feb. 23, 2023
