Committees & Liaisons

The Board of Directors for the Colorado Pilots Association consists of four elected officers (President, Vice President, Recorder, and Treasurer) and the 10-12 appointed committee heads. The officers are chosen through a nomination and election process conducted yearly and reported at the annual meeting in November. Officers serve for one year terms. The Board meets once a month on the first Monday to conduct the business of the organization. There is an open invitation to the membership to attend and participate in these meetings. Membership participation on the various committees is eagerly sought. Through the years the CPA has been fortunate to attract highly knowledgeable and capable board members that have kept the organization strong and resilient.

The Airspace Committee advocates for General Aviation concerning airspace issues. We interact with FAA, military, Colorado Aero Board and airport managers. We are generally reactive to situations; however we do make suggestions to these organizations for improvements which will benefit General Aviation.

Coordinates with other organizations on aviation education related matters and develops programs for CPA participation. Duties include: - Act as the point of contact for aviation education related matters and responds to queries related to CPA involvement. - Monitors the aviation education related activities performed by other organizations, shares this type of information with the CPA board, and makes recommendations on programs for CPA involvement. - Develops and maintains a database of members willing to act as guest speakers at aviation related events. Develop a similar list of those willing to participate in classroom programs with aviation themes to stimulate an interest in math and science. - Arrange CPA participation in support of av-ed programs conducted by other groups. - Prepares articles, as appropriate, for posting on the CPA website or inclusion in the CPA FLIGHT LINES. - Administers the CPA Annual Scholarship Program.

Mission Statement: To promote aviation safety through education, utilizing information gathered from the FAA, NTSB, AOPA and other General Aviation organizations. Host Safety Seminars and Speakers.

This committee is chaired by Bill Marvel. It consists of the fly-in hosts for each year who volunteer to run our fly-in events. The committee is charged with organizing each flying season’s slate of destinations via a January meeting of interested members. At this meeting, we gather to review fly-in possibilities and develop a calendar of events based on members who volunteer to host a fly-in to destinations throughout the western U.S. We constantly strive to provide activities for renter pilots, those with slow and those with fast aircraft. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing getaway or want to experience a strenuous hike in the mountains, we have it all. We’re always looking for destination ideas and folks who are willing to host.

Monitors Colorado and federal legislation to keep CPA members informed. The committee works on behalf of Colorado general aviation, pilots, and students interested in aviation and related pursuits. When a bill, statue, or regulation requires CPA advocacy, this committee informs the CPA Board of Directors and assists in supporting or opposing the legislative or administrative action.

Maintain membership records Prepare and mail new member information packets. Track renewal data. Interact with club Treasurer for accurate accounting. Purchase lapel pins, decals, and name badges for new member distribution.

The CPA mountain flying program is recognized as one of the best courses available to pilots who want to learn how to fly safely in the Colorado mountains. We have had almost 2000 pilots from around the country attend the course since we began offering it in 1991. The chairman of the program is Bill Standerfer who learned to fly in Colorado and has been flying there for almost 50 years. Bill is assisted by Bill Dunn, another long time Colorado pilot and mountain flight instructor. The course is taught at least twice a year in the Denver area, with occasional additional special presentations when requested by type groups and other organizations.

Publish CPA Flight Lines on a monthly basis. Members receive their edition via electronic distribution. Submission deadline is the last day of the month for next month's edition.

Monitors non-towered airports

The purpose of this committee is to provide an interface between the CPA activities and communication to the members of CPA.

Angel Flight West is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization that arranges free, non-emergency air travel for children and adults with serious medical conditions and other compelling needs. It is a network of 1,400+ pilots throughout the 13 western states that donate their aircraft, piloting skills, and all flying costs to help families in need, enabling them to receive vital treatment that might otherwise be inaccessible because of financial, medical, or geographic limitations. Founded in 1966, the Colorado Aviation Historical Society is: "To acquire, restore, preserve and provide for public display, aircraft and other objects, documents, items and things of present or historical interest or value in connection with the development and history or aviation in the State of Colorado and elsewhere". The Society began its operations in 1967 and the first aviators inducted into the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame in 1969.
